I've been waiting excitedly for the Joan Miro exhibition to open at Tate Modern and have visited it a few times over the last two weeks. The volume of works on show is incredibly impressive and the exhibition is carefully and skilfully curated. Visiting T.M is a treat on every occasion but in this instance, the exhibition really took the experience to another dimension.
My favourite pieces by far were the blue triptychs Miro painted towards the end of his life. "Bleu 1, 2 & 3" - I was really inspired by the depth and openness of these huge canvases (the three are laid out next to each other and take the whole wall space in a dedicated room) so I decided to have a bash at recreating one of them. My canvas is obviously smaller though at 44 x 56 inches it's still huge and the largest painting I've done so far. The result isn't amazing by anyone's standards but I've enjoyed making it and exploring vast spaces and textures. I'd like to ultimately paint the other two and have the three hanging side by side though I think I'm going to need a bigger apartment first !
You can see my version of "Bleu II" here
