I painted the first two paintings in the "Rastros Olvidados" series (which means "forgotten trails" in Latin American Spanish) in March & April 2011.
I take my inspiration for this series in Inca legend and in particular the travels and travails of Manco Capac, the first Sapa Inca and founder of the Kindgom of Cusco.
The idea of this series was to create a proprietary system of routes or "trails" and a corresponding "language" (demonstrated through texture) to be consistent throughout the series of paintings.
The first painting "Siete rastros de los Incas" (Seven Inca Trails), is the originating point and serves as a map charting the seven trails of the journey of discovery into new, uncharted lands. A journey of great danger but also leading to untold riches and glory.
Subsequent paintings are depictions of a particular moment or landscape of one of the seven journeys. For example, painting no 2 is the doorway to one of the trails, portraying the moment of discovery and curiosity/anticipation experienced at the start of an unknown trail.
The overarching themes here are adventure, greed, danger, excitement, promise, death, spirituality and wilderness.
I intend to explore this theme in depth and have outlined roughly 12 paintings which will be created and developed in the near future.
